Bipolar Disorder FAQ's

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder was once called manic-depressive disorder, a name that reflects swings from high-energy mania to low-energy depression. But not everyone with bipolar disorder has extreme mood swings.

There are three primary types of bipolar disorder:

Bipolar I disorder

The team at Integrated Health & Wellness Services can diagnose bipolar I disorder after you have a manic episode. In this type of bipolar disorder, your mania is so severe that you can’t function, and in many cases, you need hospitalization. Most people also have episodes of major depressive disorder.

Bipolar II disorder

People with bipolar II disorder have at least one episode each of major depression and hypomania. Hypomania causes the same symptoms as full-blown mania, but they’re less severe. Additionally, hypomania doesn’t affect your ability to function in your daily life.

Cyclothymic disorder

This type of bipolar disorder causes many mood swings between hypomania and depression. Though you have frequent ups and downs, your symptoms are less severe than the other two types of bipolar disorder.

What symptoms occur during bipolar mania?

Mania causes symptoms such as:

  • High emotional and physical energy
  • An increase in your activity level
  • Less need for sleep
  • Uncontrollable racing thoughts
  • Rapid speech
  • Distractibility
  • An inflated sense of self-importance
  • An increase in risky behaviors (spending sprees, risky driving)

You may also experience psychotic symptoms such as disorganized thinking and hallucinations.

What symptoms occur during bipolar depression?

The symptoms of bipolar depression include:

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, and worthless
  • Losing interest in activities you usually enjoy
  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Having no energy or feeling fatigued
  • Eating more or less than normal
  • Gaining or losing weight
  • Sleeping longer than usual
  • Suffering from insomnia
  • Finding it hard to think or concentrate
  • Thinking about suicide

You may have depression before your first episode of mania.

How is bipolar disorder treated?

Medication is the cornerstone of your treatment for bipolar disorder. Mood stabilizers help to balance brain chemicals and reduce or prevent mood swings. Depending on the type of bipolar disorder, you may need antidepressants or other medications.

Since bipolar disorder is a chronic condition that doesn’t have a cure, many patients get ongoing support with talk therapy. During therapy, your provider can help you learn the signs alerting you to a pending mood swing.

Your Integrated Health & Wellness Services provider also helps you manage the challenges that arise due to bipolar disorder. For example, therapy can help you learn to reduce stress, improve your sleep, and manage relationships.
